Join submariners past and present as we celebrate 108 years of the finest submarine force in
the world!
The Commander, Submarine Force, United States Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC) once again held
their Sailor of the Year Award in San Diego.  Our adopted Submarine Squadron ELEVEN played
host for a week of tours, shopping, wine tasting and fun for the eight finalists and families from
Japan, Guam, Hawaii, Washington and San Diego.  The Orange County Navy League of the United
States continues to be a major sponsor of this event by presenting each finalist with a $100.00
cash award.  This year, OCNL corporate sponsor,
Drew Estate Cigars chipped in by providing gift
bags to each finalist and some of the finest cigars in the world to the annual COMSUBPAC wine
tasting and dinner held in Temecula, CA.  Also this year, in a first for the these awards, a civilian
was asked to serve on the selection Board with the Command Master Chiefs from around the
Pacific. Orange County Superior Court Judge Rick Aguirre was sponsored by the Orange County
Navy League and participated in the interview and selection of the Sea and Shore Sailor of the
Year.  Rick also serves as President of the Latino Advocates for Education, a group that celebrates
the contributions of Hispanics, both past and present, to our armed forces.  Because of the terrific
support from responsible companies like
Drew Estate and from the Orange County Navy League,
the COMSUBPAC Sailor of the Year Awards will continue to be held at Naval Station, Point Loma in
San Diego.  If you or your company would like to be involved next year in supporting these young
men and women from the United States Pacific Fleet, email your interest by

Zulu to the eight men and women who made up this years finalists from around our Pacific
Submarine Force!

President, Legislative Affairs Jim Bras.

Your Orange County Council dropped off two checks for the troops of the VMFAT-101
"SharpShooters".  The first one to support the Marine, NCO, Junior and Senior Sailor of the First
Quarter and the second to purchase two picnic tables for the 'Shooters out door BBQ area.  Last
year the OCNL provided a deluxe Perfect Flame grill, this year we are helping to refurbish their
picnic area with tables and a wood and shingle covering. This area is used by the entire squadron
to take breaks and to enjoy a BBQ meal and the California sunshine.  We are still working on
getting the materials needed to complete the cover.  If you would like to donate lumber and/or
roofing to the Marines and Sailors of VMFAT-101, contact the Orange County Navy League by
