Orange County, Navy League of the United States

Navy Region Southwest has a new Commanding Officer. RADM Bill French returns to
San Diego to serve as its 51st leader. Established on December 31, 1919, Navy Region
Southwest is responsible for all Navy installations in Southern California, Central
California and Nevada. French Relieved RADM Len Hering after a 32 year career. The
Change of Command Ceremony was held on Pier 2 at Naval Base San Diego with the
USS Sterett, DDG-104 and USS Princeton, CG-59 tied alongside. French is a friend of the
OCNL and was responsible for recruiting the Orange County Council to support the
submarine force at Point Loma. French has served on two OCNL adopted units, USS
Helena, SSN-725 and the USS Salt Lake City, SSN-716 as well as Deputy Commander of
Submarine Squadron ELEVEN. The Orange County Navy League welcomes home the
French family!


OCNL Past President and current NLUS Legislative Affairs Chairman, Jim Bras presents the 2nd
Quarter 3rd MAW and MCAS Miramar Marine and Sailor awards to; SGT Zachary Curran, CPL
Michael Stevens, LCPL Jeffery Hollingsworth, LCPL Peterjohn Calimbas, MN1 (FMF) Michael
Gonsalez, HM2 (FMF/CAC) Edward Lucero Jr. and RPSA (FMF) Joseph Jedding.
The Third Marine Aircraft Wing and MCAS Miramar held a special Morning Colors and Awards
Ceremony on Friday, September 11. The occasion allowed for a reflection and remembrance for
those that died on that Tuesday as well as for the service men and women lost during the
continuing War on Terror. It was also an opportunity for the Orange County Council to present
award certificates and cash stipends to Marines and Sailors. OC Navy League support for the 3rd
MAW and MCAS Miramar dates back to the 1960's when that support was given at MCAS El Toro in
South Orange County.

The Great Western Grub Fest is just around the corner! A “Western-Themed” community-wide
amateur chili cooking competition and food tasting festival, the event is organized by OC Navy Leauge
partner, Homefront America, Inc. Net proceeds from the event will go to support on-going programs
such as scholarships, Easter baskets, school backpacks & supplies, holiday gifts, toys, meals,and
more for our Nations military families. The festival promises something for everyone: Military and
civilian cooking teams competing for "BEST" chili. Orange County Council adopted units, Submarine
Squadron ELEVEN, VMFAT-101 "SharpShooters" and USS Albuquerque, SSN-706 will be cooking.
Live music by Brant Vogel and his Country Western Band. "OK Corral" style western shoot-out by the
award winning group, Spurs & Satin and renowned world champion, Two Gun Spinners. This is a
great opportunity for OC Leaguers and their friends to meet some of our sponsored sailors and

Your Council's adopted Frigate, USS Gary, FFG-51 is just a couple of months away from returning
home from Her Eastern Pacific Cruise. The Boats Command Master Chief, CMDCM Gary Wade,
has sent the OC Navy League an update on what they've been doing and how things are going.

presenting the Sailor of the 2nd and 3rd Quarter Awards. While underway, protecting our Nation,
Gary did find some time to turn a few Polywogs into Shell backs during a traditional Navy ceremony.
Also while deployed, Gary welcomed new members into the Goat Locker. The OC Navy League
congratulates Chief Selects, ENC Avena, CSC Lebahn, and CTTC Tillman. BZ to the USS Gary and

Three adopted units of the Orange County Navy League joined in the chili cook off at the Great
Western Grub Fest in San Juan Capistrano. The event, held the first week of October, gave Orange
County residents a chance to meet some of the sailors, marines and Sea Cadets that are
supported by the OCNL. USS Albuquerque, SSN-706, Submarine Squadron ELEVEN and
VMFAT-101 all had booths and handed out over 8 gallons of chili. SUBRON 11 took 2nd Place. It
was a great weekend and all in attendance had a terrific time. For video from the Grub Fest visit the

November 7th, your Orange County Council has been invited to tell the Navy League story at the
13th Annual "Tribute to Mexican American Veterans". Hosted by the Latino Advocates of Orange
County, this event celebrates the contributions made to our Nation's defense by the Hispanic
community. The event will be held at California State University, Fullerton and is open to the public.
The Guest Speaker will be LtGen. Ricardo Sanchez, USA Ret. Sanchez, served as the V Corps
commander of coalition forces in Iraq from June 2003 to June 2004. He was the highest-ranking
Hispanic in the United States Army when he retired on November 1, 2006. This is a great
opportunity to meet the OC Navy League and celebrate the service Mexican Americans have made

the Sr and Jr Sailor of the 3rd Quarter Awards to STS1 (SS) Wade Duncan and FT2 (SS) Jonathan Williams.
Your Orange County Council has made it official! The USS Albuquerque, SSN-706 is now a
part of those we support. The adoption ceremony was held pier side in San Diego. Support
will include the Jr and Sr Sailor of the Quarter and Year as well as providing off budget items for
deployment. Albuquerque will be in port for a bit as she undergoes a dry dock and waterfront
maintenance period. While in San Diego, your Council also presented awards for to the
Sailors of the 3rd Quarter from Submarine Squadron ELEVEN. You can see videos from both

The Orange County Council of the Navy League joined the Latino Advocates for Education in
celebrating the contributions Mexican-Americans have made to our nation's defense. Held at
California State University, Fullerton, the event featured LtGEN Ricardo Sanchez, USA (ret). GEN
Sanchez served as the V Corps commander of coalition forces in Iraq from June 2003 to June
2004. He was the highest-ranking Hispanic in the United States Army when he retired on
November 1, 2006. This is the 13th Year in which the Latino Advocates have recognized
Hispanic veterans and they are dedicated to sharing their accomplishments with Orange County.
The OC Navy League was invited to tell our story of support to our Country's Sea Services.
Congratulations to the Latino Advocates for Education on another fun and informative opportunity
to thank those who have helped to protect the United States.


Saturday, November 7th your Orange County Council presented $1,200.00 to adopted Marine
Fighter-Attack Training Squadron, VMFAT-101. The yearly money is delivered to help the
SharpShooter's junior enlisted folks with holiday meals. The event of the presentation was the
234th Marine Corps Birthday Ball in San Diego. It also served as the last time Command Senior
Chief, Mark Pohlson would be in his official ShaprShooter capacity. Mark is retiring at the end of this
year. Mark has ensure the success of the OC Navy League's mission, which is taking care of those
who protect us. Congratulations to Mark on an excellent career and thank you to all the VMFAT-101
sailors and marines for their hard work and dedication to duty!
