Handing out the 1st Quarter 2007 awards was new Squadron ELEVEN Commodore, Captain Paul
"Chip" Jaenichen.  Taking care of the Blue Jackets of the San Diego submarine fleet has been a

Orange County Council President Colin Mellin, his wife Sonja (left) and Theanna Server at the
Chief's Hospitalty Suite and Cocktail Party during the Submarine Birthday Ball in San Diego.
The 107th Submarine Birthday Ball was held at the San Diego Sheraton Harbor Island April 14.
For the 4th year in a row, your Orange County Council hosted the Chief Petty Officer (CPO)
Hospitality Suite and Cocktail  Party.  This over 21 room provides heavy hors d'oeuvres and an
open bar to CPO's and Officers from SUBRON 11, Naval Base Point Loma and all the submarines
and support elements in San Diego. Council sponsors
Brown-Forman, Bacardi USA and
Southern Wines and Spirits again ensured that the suite was fully stocked.  Navy Leaguers from
the Orange County and San Diego Councils were also in attendance. The Submarine Birthday Ball
gives submariners and their families an opportunity to celebrate not only their contributions to our
Nation’s security but the contributions of those that have served before them.

LT Marek Strosin, the Air Transfer Officer (ATO), escorts Sailors into a C-2A Greyhound for a “goodwill”
flight by your Council's adopted “Providers” of Carrier Logistics Support Squadron Three Zero (VRC-30).
USS Nimitz, CVN-68 Public Affairs Officer LDCR Kim Marks recently provided an update on two of
your OCNL's adopted units.  Sailors from
Nimitz were treated an airborne tour of the carrier. The
“Providers” of VRC-30, hosted four “goodwill” flights open to all crew members aboard CVN-68 April
14 and 17 to promote high morale.  The “goodwill” flights allowed Sailors to take a Carrier Onboard
Delivery (COD) ride in a C-2A Greyhound – with a launch and recovery aboard Nimitz at sea - and a
chance to tour the cockpit.  While deployed your adopted carrier relies on the "Providers" for
everything from food and mail to aircraft and ship parts. LCDR Marks has been a Council friend and
supporter dating back to her days as Public Affairs Officer at Submarine Squadron ELEVEN and
with Commander, United States Third Fleet.  While deployed, Kim will ensure that the OC Navy
League is kept abreast of all the work being done by both
Nimitz and VRC-30 Det. 3.

Your adopted Arliegh Burke Guided Missile Destroyer, USS McCampbell, DDG-85, will soon be
transferred to Yokosuka, Japan.
McCampbell will trade places with the USS Gary, FFG-51.  When
the swap of home ports takes place, your Council's relationship with
McCampbell will end. While
sad, plans are in place to adopt
Gary once She arrives in San Diego.  McCampbell will still receive
great Navy League support from our sister Council in Placer County.  Once in Japan,
McCampbell
will be reunited with Her first Commanding Officer, Captain Mark Montgomery. Montgomery is
currently serving as Commodore, Destroyer Squadron Fifteen in Japan. Captain Montgomery, a
long time Council friend, was also responsible for your OC Navy League adoption of the
USS
Nimitz, CVN-68
while serving as Her Reactor Officer shortly after leaving DDG-85.
