For the third year in a row, Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet has held their Sailor of
the Year competition at Naval Base, Point Loma. Our adopted Submarine Squadron ELEVEN serves
as the host for a week long celebration honoring the Sea and Shore Sailors of the Year from around
the Pacific Sub Fleet. Sailors from Japan, Guam, Hawaii, Washington and San Diego were treated to
excursions to a Temecula Winery, Sea World, The San Diego Zoo and a San Diego Harbor Dinner
Cruise. The week was capped off with a luncheon, held Tuesday, in honor of the eight finalists that
compete for the coveted title of COMSUBPAC Sailor of the Year. Your Orange County Council
supports this event by providing each finalist with a $100.00 VISA Gift Card. The two selected as
Sailor of the Year go on to compete against the Pacific Fleet Sailors of the Year with the winner
receiving a meritorious upgrade to Chief Petty Officer. Your Council is proud to support all the sailors
of the Pacific Submarine Force and knows that regardless of who ultimately wins the competition,
the real winners are our Navy and our Nation. Congratulations to each of the eight finalists.

Submarine Squadron ELEVEN Change of Command. L-R New CSS-11 Commodore,
CAPT Paul Jaenichen, CAPT Mike McLaughlin and RADM Joe Walsh.
CAPT Paul Jaenichen relieved CAPT Michael McLaughlin as Commodore of your Council's
Submarine Squadron ELEVEN during a pier side ceremony held aboard the Los Angeles
Class-Submarine USS Jefferson City SSN-759. Command of SUBRON 11 is one of the toughest
and most diverse O-6 assignments in the fleet. With increasing importance on submarine
warfare in the Pacific, Squadron 11 is responsible for 4 Los Angeles Class Nuclear Attack subs,
three Torpedo Weapons Retrievers and the only floating dry dock still crewed by Navy personnel.
Three additional LA-Class Boats will be added soon bringing the number of submarines to seven.
CAPT McLaughlin's next assignment is chief of staff for Commander, Submarine Force in Norfolk,
VA. A good friend to your Council, Mike continually ensured that our support for the troops at Naval
Base, Point Loma was unwavering. The Orange County Navy League wishes CAPT McLaughlin
all the best in his new position and welcomes CAPT Jaenichen aboard as Commander of the
finest submarine squadron in the Navy.
